This was a special night. Jeff Mangum had not performed in over a decade until he started resurfacing, here and there, in the last few years. During his hiatus, his 2 albums (with Neutral Milk Hotel) On Avery Island, and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea garnered the recognition they deserved as two of the most unique and important albums of the 1990s. The albums’ discovery left many new fans without the opportunity to have ever seen Jeff (or his band) live…until 2011 when a scarce number of shows were announced. I am one of the few lucky enough to have been a fan when the band was still together…and I saw them play 4 times. Four of the best shows I’ve ever attended. The show at Town Hall, which sold out in minutes, was the first show in New York and took place on the night of the surreal October nor’easter. The storm didn’t stop the fans from coming out, or from an amazing performance. Hearing these songs again live and witnessing so many people have the satisfaction of hearing them for the first time was a unique moment for me.
